Stockholm is considered to be one of the world's most beautiful capitals - situated at the outlet of the large lake Mälaren into the Baltic Sea on numerous adjacent islands. Stockholm was founded in the mid 13th century, and is today a modern metropolis with 1.6 million residents. Stockholm offers a wide selection of shops and department stores, more then 60 museums as well as over 700 restaurants. In the summertime there is a large variety of cultural and tourist events to attend.
The region, including Uppsala, is one of the most research-intensive in Europe, with a special emphasis on biotechnology.
